The following are three poems designed to help improve 7th and 8th grader's standardized test-taking skills in a fun and innovative way. The three poems are broken up so that many speakers can engage in the activity and maximal class participation can be reached. At the bottom of each section, a brief analysis of the objectives and skills the students will able to learn and apply is provided.

Creative and innovative ways to introduce children to Readers Theater.
International Dot Day is a movement inspired by The Dot By Peter H. Reynolds.
International Dot Day teaches children of all ages and grade levels the importance of self-confidence. Just like Vashti, sometimes all they need is a teacher to encourage them. You could be that teacher. Here is a worksheet that will help the students connect themselves to Vashti's story.

Before the students perform, it is essential to make them aware of what exactly they will be scored on. ReadWriteThink.org has provided a wonderful example. While Reader's Theater is fun, students should assess and understand the goal. Delivery and cooperation as a group and as an individual is key.

Jasmine Cruzado currently is a senior at the University of Texas Arlington. She is currently studying Communication Studies with a minor in Psychology, graduating Fall 2016. After graduation she intends to either go straight to Graduate school or become a Teacher.
